Georgetown, Guyana: June 5, 2024 – Uganda made cricket history these days by securing their first ever T20 World Cup win against Papua New Guinea. Opting to bowl first, their selection proved useful as they bundled out PNG for a modest seventy-seven runs in 19.1 overs.

The Ugandan bowlers were on fire from the start and the PNG batsmen suffered as they found their footing. Lega Siaka (12) and Hiri Hiri (15) put up brief resistance but wickets kept falling thanks to Ugandan captain Brian Masaba's clever spin. A collective bowling effort saw Alpesh Ramjani, Cosmas Kyewuta, Juma Miyagi and Frank Nsubuga take two wickets each, with Masaba himself claiming one.

Chasing a modest target of 78, Uganda's top order initially stumbled, dismissing their first 3 batsmen for just 6 runs. However, vice-captain Riazat Ali Shah steadied the delivery with a composed knock of 33 runs from fifty-six balls. He weathered the early hurricane and ensured that Uganda did not lose momentum. Despite losing wickets around him, Shah remained calm and collected singles and doubles to lead his team to victory.

While Juma Miyagi's unlucky miss halted his progress, Uganda were on top with use. Shah's calculated technique ensured they chased down the target with 10 balls to spare and 3 wickets in hand. The PNG bowlers, despite taking wickets, conceded crucial bonuses through wides, allowing Uganda some breathing room.

This historic victory is a second of great pride for Ugandan cricket. The group's jubilant celebrations were a testament to their will and hard work. They will now look to build on that momentum as they progress through the T20 World Cup.
